Am I a candidate for surgery?
You may be a candidate for obesity surgery if:
- You have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or more (about 80 pounds overweight for women, 100 pounds overweight for men)
- You have a BMI between 35 and 40 and a serious obesity-related disease (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high serum lipids, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, GERD, arthritis, or coronary artery disease)
- You understand the lifestyle changes that weight loss surgery will require
- You have been unsuccessful at maintaining weight loss through diet and exercise
Please reference the Ideal Body Weight Chart to determine if you are possibly obese or morbidly obese and a candidate for weight loss surgery.
Support Groups
As part of Weight Loss Surgical Centers of Louisiana’s ongoing commitment to long-term health, we ask our patients and encourage our potential patients to attend support groups. These structured group meetings offer the opportunity to interact with other individuals who have had, or who are considering weight loss surgery.
Conducted by a facilitator, each meeting focuses on topics pertinent to individuals who have undergone surgical treatment for morbid obesity. There are a variety of topics such as nutrition, diet, exercise, coping in social situations that involve food, follow-up health issues and more.
